Singapore buyers have a few different kinds of sparkling water maker to choose from. SodaStream still dominates the market, while other options suit different budgets, kitchen setups and whether you also want filtration.

The first decision is whether you want a standalone countertop carbonator or a built-in sparkling-water purifier. This guide compares the main types you can realistically buy in Singapore right now: manual SodaStream models, an electric SodaStream, Drinkmate's multi-drink carbonator, the design-led Aarke, and Velta's combined purifier and carbonator. They do quite different jobs, and for many homes the cheapest one is the right one.

Soda Maker or Sparkling Water Purifier?

"Soda maker" is the everyday name for a countertop carbonator: it adds CO2 to water you have already filtered or poured yourself. A sparkling water purifier filters the water first and carbonates it inside the same machine.

If you are happy with the water you already drink and only want bubbles, a soda maker is the cheaper and simpler tool, and most of this list falls into that category. The combined machines are only worth comparing if you also want purification and temperature control from the same appliance.

We are upfront about that, and we do not count its extra functions as an automatic win: if you only need carbonation, a SodaStream or Drinkmate costs far less.

The Terra listed by SodaStream Singapore is the range's entry-level model. It uses the Quick Connect system for CO2 cylinders, which means you snap the cylinder in rather than screwing it. It's a small detail, but it makes swapping cylinders noticeably less awkward.

You fill the included 1L bottle with cold water, lock it into the machine, press the button on top a few times until you hear a buzz, and you've got sparkling water. The whole process takes about 10 seconds.

The Terra comes with one 60L CO2 cylinder and a 1L BPA-free bottle. SodaStream lists a one-for-one exchange at $29.50 and up to 60 litres per cylinder. That is a best-case CO2 cost of about $0.49 per litre; stronger fizz produces fewer litres. Empty cylinders can be exchanged through SodaStream's online service or participating Singapore retailers.

Our take: This is the uncomplicated answer for most buyers who only want to carbonate water. It has the lowest listed purchase price in the comparison, needs no power and uses SodaStream's local exchange network. It does not filter water, its bottles have a printed expiry date and fizz strength depends on how many times you press.

SodaStream Art

The Art performs the same job as the Terra with a different design. A top lever replaces the push button and gives the machine a more mechanical, retro appearance.

The Art and Terra use the same Quick Connect CO2 system and bottle size. The listed price difference mainly covers the Art's body design and lever mechanism.

Our take: Buy the Art over the Terra for its lever and appearance, not for a different drink. It was listed about $70 higher when checked and has the same lack of filtration and Quick Connect cylinder requirement.

SodaStream E-Terra

The E-Terra combines SodaStream's Quick Connect CO2 system with electric carbonation. You get three preset fizz levels at the press of a button, plus the easier cylinder swapping.

It is the most expensive SodaStream in the current Singapore range. The three presets give you the same fizz every time instead of counting presses, and Quick Connect means no screwing the cylinder in. Whether that is worth $150 more than the Terra depends on how much you value powered controls and presets.

Our take: The presets are useful when several people want repeatable fizz without learning the manual press. The trade-off is straightforward: this was the most expensive SodaStream listed here, needs a power outlet and still does not filter the water.

Drinkmate OmniFizz

The Drinkmate OmniFizz sold by Drinkmate Singapore has one important advantage: it can carbonate drinks other than plain water. Its removable Fizz Infuser lets you add bubbles to juice, iced tea, cocktails, wine, or a drink that has gone flat. SodaStream's own advice is to carbonate plain water only and add flavour afterwards.

The Singapore package includes a one-litre bottle and a standard 60L screw-in CO2 cylinder. The machine is narrow at 13cm wide and needs no electricity. Drinkmate offers a two-year warranty and has a local distributor with a cylinder-exchange service.

Drinkmate's one-for-one exchange is listed at $19.95 for up to 60 litres, or about $0.33 per litre at the maximum stated yield. Home delivery requires the same number of empty cylinders as the order; physical exchanges are also available through listed retail partners.

Our take: Drinkmate is the clear specialist choice if you genuinely plan to carbonate juice, cocktails or tea. That flexibility adds parts to rinse after sugary drinks, and the proprietary bottle and Fizz Infuser still need to be handled correctly.

Velta HydroSpark+

The HydroSpark+ is a fundamentally different product from the carbonators above. It's a countertop reverse-osmosis water purifier, hot-and-cold dispenser, and sparkling water maker in one machine. This means you don't need separate purifier and carbonator appliances. You pick ambient, hot, chilled or sparkling on the machine, and the display reminds you when the filter or CO2 is due.

Its composite cartridge combines sediment, carbon, reverse-osmosis, and post-carbon stages before carbonation. Singapore tap water is already safe to drink. The reason to consider it is having hot, cold and sparkling in one place, your own taste preference, and one appliance instead of three.

Our take: HydroSpark+ makes sense only when a purifier and hot and cold water are already on the shopping list. It combines those jobs with adjustable sparkling water and can use a refill tank or pipe-in supply. It costs far more, takes more counter space and adds filter, electricity and CO2 costs. If bubbles are all you are after, a standalone carbonator is the better buy.

Velta publishes a maximum of 100 glasses of 330 ml from its 0.6L cylinder, or up to 33 litres. Replacement CO2 cylinders are available from Velta Singapore, but the current cylinder price and empty-cylinder return process are not published online. Ask for both before buying; the best-case gas cost per litre is the quoted cylinder price divided by 33.

Aarke Carbonator III

Aarke is a Swedish brand focused on design-led sparkling water makers. The Carbonator III has an all-stainless-steel body with clean Scandinavian lines and a more architectural appearance than most plastic carbonators.

Aarke specifies standard 400–425g/60L screw-in cylinders. That is not the pink Quick Connect format used by current SodaStream Terra, Art and E-Terra models. Drinkmate's Singapore exchange service accepts Aarke empties, providing one documented local refill route at $19.95 per exchange and up to 60 litres.

Aarke does not list a dedicated Singapore store, so availability is mainly through import and marketplace sellers. So whether you get a local warranty or a cylinder in the box depends on the seller. One Amazon Singapore listing was about $425 when this guide was updated; compare the landed price, cylinder inclusion and local warranty before ordering.

Our take: Aarke sells materials and appearance more than extra function. The metal body is distinctive and the screw-in cylinder has a documented exchange route through Drinkmate Singapore, but the imported price is high and the warranty and included cylinder depend on the seller.

CO2 Running Costs and Singapore Refills

The upfront price is only part of the picture. CO2 yield varies with fizz strength, serving size and water temperature, so published maximums produce a best-case gas cost rather than a guaranteed household cost.

These figures exclude the machine, electricity, bottles and any delivery fee. Stronger carbonation reduces the number of litres a cylinder produces, so actual gas cost per litre will usually be higher than the best-case figure. Connector type matters: a nominally similar 60L cylinder is not automatically compatible.

HydroSpark+ cannot be compared on CO2 alone because its price also covers purification, heating and chilling.
